Since I made the decision to produce a line of patterns I have been doing a lot of planning and research on the tools that I would need to upgrade and invest in. I have been not-so patiently waiting for a rather large package to arrive… and finally it did!
Meet my new dressform! She is so pretty, I think we will be best of friends. Any ideas on a name?
This is the Alvaform Studio – Alva is an industry leader in dressforms and blocks. This year they introduced the studio model which is aimed for more of the independent designer or student. She is made of a durable foam – so no collapsible shoulders or hips are needed. You may even notice the fact that she has a much more… shall we say life-like figure? That’s right, no flat tummies or invisible derrières here. Meanwhile heavens to betsy they even got rid of the conical bust.
During my research it turns out that just about every 10 years a new survey of body shape and measurement is taken, Alva has scanned thousands of bodies to come up with this new more modern form that adheres to ASTM guidelines. Kathleen at Fashion Incubator has shown some side by side comparisons of the Alva with other standard forms and goes a little more in depth about the differences if you are interested.
Now I think I have quite a bit of work to do!
P.S. Don’t be surprised in the wee hours of the morn when the sun is just starting to rise if your dog mistakes your new form for an intruder…
